Under 8 Development Program

Click here for information about our U10 Development Program!

 Purpose:

The purpose of the Under 8 Development Program is to provide high level training to all Under 8 players so that they will be prepared to compete in the U10 Far Post Travel Team.  Players of all abilities, ages 6-8 years old, are invited to participate.  The primary goals of this program are mastery of ball, skill building and having fun.

U8 Season:

Players are welcome to participate in each of the four Under 8 sessions.

  • Fall Development Program ~ September/October

  • Winter Development Program ~ November/December

  • Spring Development Program I ~ March/April

  • Spring Development Program II ~ May/June

Each of the 4 sessions is a six-week soccer program geared towards the 6-8 year old soccer player who can benefit from professional instruction and fun, challenging team play.  Boys and girls enrolled in the U8 Development Program meet twice a week.

Organization:

The Tuesday night session focuses on individual development and skill-building.  The Thursday night session enables the player to implement his/her new skills in three 'mini-matches.'  The benefits of the mini-matches ~ or small-sided games ~ are that all players are more engaged in play and get more touches on the ball.  This helps develop player’s awareness and skill.  Players are not put on set teams for the sessions.  Teams will be equally balanced by talent and will change every couple weeks.  This will enable players to get to know all of the other players in the program.

The Under 8 Development Program is designed to maximize a player’s time spent on the ball ~ this means “no laps, no lines, and no lectures.”  This format will maximize player participation, maximize the number of touches on the ball and develop the player’s skills and tactical field knowledge at a much faster rate than full sided soccer.

Club Executive Director Todd Kingsbury, on the U8 Development Program:  "This is one of my favorite programs because it incorporates technical training with a game format as well.  We are really able to teach some specific skills and concepts in training and then encourage the use of these in game situations.  Of all our Educational offerings, I see the most development by young players through this program and its format."
