Special Feature:  Far Post U14 Boys Visit the Dutch -- Ben Hardy

April 15, 2005.  While some Vermont folk were heading off to warmer climes to enjoy their April break and still others were sticking around contemplating whether April was too early to be putting on the summer tires, Far Post’s U14 Boys team was on a plane destined for the tiny sea-threatened soccer country of Holland.

It is an annual event for the club – each year the U14 Boys and Girls teams spend the fall and winter months raising money for their 10-day April journey abroad.  Past years have seen teams travel to France, Italy, England, Germany, Belgium, and Holland, but this year both teams would restrict their “vacation” to that nation by whom we, as a club, are inspired to wear orange.

Our 10 days was a whirlwind of “transfers,” tourism, and, of course, soccer.  The latter took up most of our trip – we played 4 games against four very strong Dutch teams (one was 2nd Division Fortuna Sittard’s youth team), participated in half a dozen intense training sessions under the friendly and demanding KNVB (Royal Dutch Soccer Association) trainer named Ber (pronounced “bear”), and took in two professional games and two professional trainings.

Trip highlights included watching PSV train before an important match against Vitesse.  PSV were currently first in the Dutch 1st Division, and winning their next game would mean clinching the league championship.  DaMarcus Beasley, the scrawny and speedy US National Team player, was also playing club soccer for PSV.  After a casual but entertaining training we were treated to Beasley’s company, and the kids were afforded numerous photo opportunities with the gracious young player.  He even gave one of our players a pair of his Nike Vapor’s!

The next night we attended PSV’s game against 6th-placed Vitesse in PSV’s stadium.  It was an explosive atmosphere and both the boys and the girls sat in wonderment as PSV scored a pair of lovely goals and took the three points to secure their spot as league champions.  To be on-hand for the presenting of the league trophy was an experience of a lifetime.  Many a Far Post youth left the stadium chanting “Campeones, campeones, ole for PSV!!!!”  To not chant it, of course, meant drawing unwanted attention from the belligerent fans, so the boys did well to blend in.

All in all it was a successful trip that the boys will remember for the rest of their lives.  They represented Far Post, Vermont, and the United States well, and for that we are proud of them.  Well done Far Post U14s!!!!

Progressus, Educatio, Officium

In one of his last e-mails to Club Executive Director Todd Kingsbury, the late Bill Kohlasch wrote about the Far Post crest.  Some of his players had inquired about the Latin words and their meanings.  Bill was one of Far Post’s ‘founding fathers’ and recalled the process of creating the design.  “Much thought went into these words,” said Bill in his memo, so “I just thought I'd pass this along.  Every player in the club should know what they mean.  Originally, we were Far Post - The Family Club, but it was felt that we needed to do a better job of representing some of our founding ideals.”

Progressus:  Progress

There is a progression to the program, to the training and to our system of learning.
This is how we teach the players ~ by building on what they’ve already learned.

Educatio:  Education

We want players who want to learn the game.
We want players who are willing to work.
We want thoughtful players.

Officium:  Service

The vision is to have older players coaching younger players.
We want players interested in giving back to the club and to the game.

Thanks, Bill, for reminding us of our Far Post heritage.  Always the teacher ~

Dezotell Named Women’s Head Coach

Far Post U12 and U18 Boys Coach Kyle Dezotell has been appointed Women’s Head Soccer Coach at Johnson State College (JSC).  In addition to his responsibilities with the women’s soccer program, Kyle will continue in the position of Men's Head Soccer Coach.  Last Fall, Kyle coached the men's team to the #7 seed and NAC Conference Quarter-Finals in his first-year as Head Coach.

A 2003 graduate of Middlebury College and former standout at North Country Union High School , Dezotell took over for former Head Coach Brian Buzcek (Coach, FP U11 Boys). During his time at Middlebury, Dezotell set several career scoring records, including goals, assists and points. He was named All-New England and Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year and earned a position in the 2003 NSCAA/Adidas Senior Bowl. Dezotell has also been a member of the Vermont Voltage professional soccer club.  Prior to his appointment at JSC, Dezotell was an Assistant Coach with the St. Michael’s College soccer program.

Kyle’s involvement with Far Post goes beyond coaching two teams.  He is a frequent trainer/instructor for many of the girls teams during the indoor season as well as a ‘key staffer’ for the club’s educational programs including Far Post Juniors, Schools of Excellence and vacation camps.

Congratulations, Kyle!

Outdoor Training Policies and Procedures

Although we’re hopeful that the rainy season is behind us, Vermont’s summer weather is often unpredictable.  Far Post coaches were recently briefed on inclement weather policies and other procedures for the summer season.  All parents and players should be aware of these as well, so here’s a brief summary:

  • If the fields have standing water, teams may be moved to a nearby open space so that we do not cause damage to the fields or have to cancel practice.
  • We will not train during lightning or the threat of lightning.
  • When asked to end practice by an official representing any of the town recreational departments with whom we work, please be understanding and respectful of their request.  We are very fortunate to have access to the various fields on our schedule and must maintain a positive relationship with all of their representatives to ensure potential future use.
  • Please leave the training facilities clear of trash and left over gear.  Players often need reminding in this area ~ parental assistance is appreciated.
  • Please be respectful of any and all traffic restrictions at all facilities that we use.
  • Please remember that we are all guests at these facilities, and it is critical that we be respectful of these resources that are being made available to us.
  • Last but not least, please remember that we are all representatives of Far Post Soccer Club, and our conduct and interactions are a direct reflection on the entire Club.  Even if there is only one bad interaction with officials or other representatives, this jeopardizes our reputation and our relationship with the groups involved.

Thanks to all parents and players for your continued support of Far Post soccer!
