Far Post Teams Participate in Jarred Williams Tournament

The Far Post Soccer Club U14 Boys and U16 Boys competed in the annual Jarred Williams tournament held over the holiday break.  The highlight for the U14 Boys was Andrew Mercier’s goal off a spectacular bicycle kick during the game against the Plattsburg U14s.  The U14s went on to beat the Nordic U14s and won their division in the tournament.

The U16 Boys began with a close 3-2 loss to the NY/Beckmantown – Bucks.  Their second match was a 4-2 win over Fairfax followed by a victory over MMU, 3-2.  With only four teams in the tournament and a tie game in the bracket, a 2 and 1 record gave the Far Post U16s the number one seed and a grudge match against NY in the finals.  Far Post came away with a 5-1 game to win the tournament for the third year in a row!

Congratulations to both the U14 and U16 Boys teams!

Jarred Williams was a Nordic Spirit Soccer Club player who died at the age of 13 from a brain tumor.  The tournament was established in his memory with proceeds to the Jarred Williams Foundation

Where Are They Now?

This issue of ePost highlights Ray Campanile, a former familiar face in many of our Futsal leagues in his role as Director for the Mandible Soccer Club.

Ray Campanile made the leap from high school ball to college ball in 2005 after accepting a position as Head Men’s Coach at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT.  Being hired in late July, he was lucky enough to recruit former high school standout, Shane Bufano who scored 16 goals for the Eagles this past season.  Although the squad was very young (12 freshmen, 4 sophomores, and 1 junior) they were able to finish 6-12 and barely miss the Independent Conference Championships.

Ray also ran the Mandible Soccer Club which is now beginning to grow in the Southern VT area and hopes to share the joy of Futsal.  "I miss Futsal very much but more dear to me are the people that made it such a special six years of playing," says Ray.

Ray was the Head Soccer Coach at Harwood Union High School for four seasons, and named Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004.  His teams were awarded the Team Sportsmanship award in 2001 and 2004.  He served a term on the Vermont Soccer Association (VSA) Board as Director of Amateurs from 1999-2000 and is an original founding member of the Vermont Amateur Soccer League (VASL) and Vermont State Soccer Association (VSSA).  On the VASL board, Ray served as VP Director of Awards, Secretary and most recently as its President for the 2004-2005 season.  Ray has been a frequent coach for the Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Ray notes, “I love Vermont soccer players and am looking to fill the ranks at Green Mountain with them.  There are great expectations for the soccer team here and the administration is incredibly supportive of the effort.”  Ray can be reached at 802.287.8243 or campaniler@greenmtn.edu.

Far Post Honor Roll

Far Post congratulates the following on their respective achievements.  To submit news for future issues, send to admin@farpostsoccerclub.com.

Ethan Harlow, a Far Post U14 player, has been selected for the next United States Under-14 Boys National Team event, taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico, January 15-22, 2006.  Ethan just returned from Austin, Texas where he was representing the Region One team that played against the other three Regional teams from the United States.  Ethan is the starting center back for the Region One team and will most likely be playing center back for the National team.  The team will be staying and practicing at Club Deportivo Primavera, a sports club operated by the University of Guadalajara.  They will play three matches in the city of Guadalajara, likely at a place called VALLEY VERDE.

Coach/Executive Director Todd Kingsbury on Ethan, “We are so excited for Ethan to have this opportunity.  This is a true testament to the hard work, determination, focus and passion that Ethan has for the game.  We wish Ethan Good Luck."

Brendan Harlow, a Far Post U12 player and Ethan's brother, was recently recognized as the winner of the Vacation Juggling Challenge.  (see our December 9 issue of ePost).

In recognition of his efforts and accomplishment, Coach Kyle Dezotell awarded Brendan with a new Futsal ball.  Whenever Brendan comes to Far Post, the first thing he does is to get a ball and start juggling.

Coach Kyle on juggling:  “Juggling is one of the best things a player can do to develop their skill and confidence with the ball.  I think we should do this again later in the winter session!”

Two other players were commended for their efforts:  Joseph Castano (U10B) and Hannah Worthley (U14G).  Hopefully more players will start practicing and take the challenge later this winter!
