Opening November 8
After
months of planning and preparation, The Soccer Center will officially open on
Wednesday, November 8. The newly-fit-up North Expo building of the Robert E.
Miller Expo Center at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds will house Far Post’s
travel team training, Far Post’s educational events and The Soccer Center's
Futsal Indoor League games. The South Expo building will continue to house the
Nordic Soccer Club’s training and educational activities as well as The Soccer
Center's 7v7 Indoor League games. Although both clubs remain independent in
identity and operation for travel team and educational programs, the Indoor
Leagues are collaborative and cooperative effort of the two clubs, designed to
provide the best indoor competitive soccer experience for Vermont soccer players
of all ages and abilities.
A ceremonial ‘first whistle’ will mark
the official opening in each building and all are invited to attend this
exciting event in the history of Far Post and Nordic Soccer Clubs.

Thank you from Ghana!
Many of you may
recall our summer Ghana project, in which we collected donations of used cleats
and shipped them, along with Far Post's remaining inventory of Futsal t-shirts
(since they would be replaced with new ones for The Soccer Center). The
initial request came from Bentley College through Far Post parent, Tyler Wood in
late June and in less than a week's time, we collected nearly 50 pair of soccer
shoes and shipped them with Tyler to Bentley.
We received the following correspondence and
photos this past week!

| Bentley students
got the pleasure of giving your gifts of soccer balls galore, boots
enough for several small villages of children, and enough matching
shirts to set up 12 teams for league play. |

You
can see the line of girls and the line of boys, each holding a Far Post
shirt and awaiting their fitting for "boots." It was an amazing day at
Mmofra Trom, Notice how the girls popped those shirts on right over
their dresses! |
The group photo shows the
soccer coach who will continue the clinics and league play we got to
start up for the 20 children who reside at Mmofra Trom. They are
holding up the flag of Ghana, in celebration of Ghana's victory over the
USA in the World Cup, just one month prior.

 |
One
specific story was very touching. Originally Bentley students opened
only one box and began the joyful fitting. But they found nothing quite
small enough for little Josephine and Wendy. Both were fighting back
the tears as their "best fit available" boots were being tied up for
them with a "you'll grow into them" wish from heart-sick Christine who
was in charge of the fitting. We all looked on helplessly. Then we
opened another box which we thought was more shirts--and it was more
boots! ALL the children were gasping quietly with hope for Wendy and
for Josephine, and everyone held their breath while Christine searched
for small sizes. Voila! Two very tiny pairs emerged to joyful jumping
from the children. I wish we could have filmed the whole thing for you.
|
Even
more important is that Mmofra Trom, with its well-stocked bin of
"boots," will now attract street children from neighboring villages who
will come to play soccer. They will get much more than soccer. They
will get one good meal each day, job skills training, and a regular
health and nutrition assessment. Eventually, we hope to add classrooms
to the schools so we can offer education to more and more children who
are parentless and fending for themselves.
Our warmest thanks!
