Team of the Week: Mexicali Men’s Over 35!

The
Mexicali Men’s Over 35 soccer
team is looking to win its 11th straight session championship
this winter. General Manager Joe Weith put the team together in 2002. He
selected players that loved the game of soccer but were also committed to
being a true team.
Equally important, Joe secured the sponsorship of Mexicali Restaurant in
Taft Corners.

This local support has been an important component to the success of the team. Not
only has Mexicali provided financial support, but it has provided a welcome
location where all the Futsal teams are welcome to meet after each game.
Spending this time with our team and the competition has allowed us to build a
strong bond amongst teammates as well as enjoy the company of our competition.
It’s also been fun to see many of the women teams enjoy the post game activities
offered by Mexicali’s.

The team has also been
successful because most of the original team members are still together.
Strong players like Brian Smith, Kevin Barber and Barry Dugan have helped to
form a solid nucleus for the team. A strong goaltender, Mike Olsen, has
also helped to stabilize the defense and keep other teams at bay. Chuck
Schwer has helped to keep the average team age up and has taken over the GM
role for the team. Very talented players and Far Post coaches, Todd
Kingsbury and Bill Durkin have added to the overall depth of this team. And
newcomers Matt Gazo and Bobby Stoddard have fit well into the team chemistry
and success. Each week, players are selected as the week’s
MVP and
Wanker. At the end of each
session, a session MVP and session Wanker is selected. This has helped to
keep our game sharp and our mistakes in check. This also added a lot of fun
to playing as we enjoy celebrating both the success and boneheads that are
all part of the game. Team Mexicali has enjoyed a lot of success over the
past 3 plus years, but most importantly we have enjoyed playing soccer and
being a fun team. |
